Goodbye Fast Fashion
In recent years, the fast-fashion industry has become increasingly notorious for its detrimental impact on the environment and society. It is now recognised as one of the world’s dirtiest industries, producing more greenhouse gases than flights and shipping combined. Not only is it the second-largest polluter, but it is also the second-largest consumer of water and supporter of modern slavery in the world.
As someone who was once caught in the cycle of fast-fashion, I can attest to its negative consequences. I would spend hours browsing through shopping apps, ordering clothes, trying them on, returning them, and repeating the process. I would wear my clothes once, only to consign them later. And the pieces that I did manage to keep would often fall apart within a year, leaving me with a wardrobe full of clothes but “nothing to wear.”
I realised that my fast-fashion habits were not only harming the environment but also not getting me any closer to my dream wardrobe. So, I decided to take action. In February, I enrolled in a styling course and embarked on a shopping ban. I needed to get clear on my personal style before I could shop again.
Leaving fast fashion behind and becoming more fashion-conscious may seem daunting at first, but by taking small steps and making conscious choices, anyone can make a difference. Remember that every little bit counts, and together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable fashion industry.
